[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong] As game console prices surge, the Nintendo Switch Lite is drawing attention as an option for playing games with the lowest upfront purchase cost in 2026. Its relatively low price of $230 (about 300,000 won) is seen as a strength as prices for Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox and high-performance handheld PCs rise. Some also point out that buyers should consider not only the device price but also game purchase costs and long-term usability.

Engadget, an IT-focused media outlet, reported on Oct. 25 (local time) that the Switch Lite sells for $230, the lowest entry price among major consoles and handheld PC lineups.

In the game console market, the burden of buying has been growing due to factors such as tariffs and rising memory prices. Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) Pro was $700 (about 920,000 won) at launch in 2024, but its current price has been introduced as having risen to as high as $900 (about 1.2 million won). In some resale markets, the price also exceeds $1,400 (about 1.85 million won). The disc-free PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is $600 (about 800,000 won), and Microsoft’s Xbox Series S is about $500 (about 660,000 won).

Compared with those, the Switch Lite is an attractive alternative for consumers looking to cut upfront purchase costs. Its low price also comes with functional limits.

The Switch Lite is part of the existing Nintendo Switch lineup and is a model focused on handheld gaming. It does not support a TV connection dock, and it cannot run Nintendo Switch 2-only games. Users who prioritise the performance of the latest devices or new games may need to consider these points.

For consumers who want to play existing Switch games, there are enough options. They can play a range of third-party and indie titles including Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, as well as Hades, Portal and Undertale.

The next-generation Nintendo Switch 2 has been introduced as starting from $500. Its upfront price is higher than the Switch Lite, but an advantage is the ability to buy second-hand games based on physical cartridges. Choosing a bundle that includes games such as Mario Kart World or Nintendo Switch Sports Resort can also secure content to play immediately after buying the device.

Handheld PCs show a big gap from the Switch Lite in terms of initial cost. Valve’s Steam Deck OLED starts from $789 (about 1.04 million won), and Asus’s ROG Xbox Ally X reaches about $1,000 (about 1.32 million won). There are products below $600, but the choices are limited for new units, the assessment said.

Even so, it is hard to compare long-term game spending based only on device prices. On PC game platforms such as Steam and GOG, older games are often sold for a few dollars or discounted relatively quickly after a new release. With large and frequent discounts, users who buy several games may be able to offset part of the gap in upfront device prices.

By contrast, Nintendo games are cited as a burden because prices do not fall much even after release. Even if the Switch Lite looks cheap at first, total spending could rise more than expected if users expand their game library around popular big titles.

Game subscription services are also a variable that determines costs. Game Pass and PlayStation Plus let users play a range of games for a monthly fee and are useful for users who frequently play many titles. But if subscription fees are about $10 to $23 a month, additional spending accumulates over long-term use. For consumers trying to minimise spending, it could instead be a burden.

New game prices are also hard to ignore. Engadget pointed to the burden of buying new releases, suggesting that GTA VI could cost $80. It means total spending can rise quickly if users buy multiple big games even after purchasing a console cheaply.

Free-to-play games are an alternative to cut budgets. Overwatch, Rocket League, The Finals, Fall Guys and Genshin Impact can be played for long periods without buying the games separately. Free games, though, often have monetisation elements such as paid items and season passes, so users need to watch for additional spending.

Handheld PCs are also differentiated by serving as both a game device and a computer. Outside game launchers, they can run productivity apps or be used for typical PC tasks. By contrast, the Switch and PlayStation 5 are game-focused devices with a relatively narrower range of uses.

In the end, in the 2026 game console market, the Switch Lite is a favourable option for consumers who want the lowest upfront purchase cost. If users want the latest games and high performance, higher-end consoles or handheld PCs may be suitable, and those who frequently buy games should also weigh platform-by-platform discount policies.

On device price alone, the Switch Lite leads, but the best choice may vary depending on a user’s gaming habits when taking into account long-term game purchase costs, subscription fees and range of uses.
