SMR special act, enforcement decree take effect; public-private commercialisation begins

South Korea has put in place an institutional framework to support small modular reactor (SMR) development from research and development through demonstration and commercialisation at the government-wide level. The Ministry of Science and ICT said the SMR special act and its enforcement decree take effect from Sept. 11. The law sets out support for R&D and demonstration and aims to link outcomes to commercialisation and industry. A public-private committee and planning system will be established, along with support for private-led projects and R&D zones.

South Korea steps up preparations for AIDC special act, science ministry seeks views on subordinate rules

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT has gathered views from industry and academia to set detailed standards for the Special Act on Promoting the AI Data Center Industry. The ministry held a public forum in Seoul on Sept. 9 to discuss subordinate regulations ahead of the law\'s implementation on March 10, 2027. Topics included the scope of AIDC recognition, reporting for construction and operation, streamlined permits, facility and power-related exceptions, and procedures and support for special zone designations.
