MSIT steps up follow-up work on special act for AI data centres

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT is speeding up work to draft lower-level regulations for the Special Act on Promoting the Artificial Intelligence Data Centre Industry. The ministry formed a working group after the act was promulgated on June 9 and held a kickoff meeting in Seoul on June 18. The act sets out special provisions on streamlined permits, exemptions from grid impact assessments in certain cases, and eased installation standards, and includes broader support measures for the sector.

AI strategy committee begins preparations to implement AIDC special act

South Korea\'s National AI Strategy Committee held a policy seminar with related agencies on the special act to promote the AI data centre industry. The seminar shared key measures such as one-stop licensing and designation of AIDC special zones, and reviewed plans for drafting an enforcement decree and running the committee’s deliberation and voting authority. The committee said it will refine review procedures, standards and operating methods before the law takes effect.

MSIT says it has laid groundwork for South Korea to become a top 3 AI power

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT said it has laid the groundwork for the country to become one of the world’s top three AI powers over the past year, alongside restoring the R&D ecosystem and guaranteeing basic communications rights. It said it is pushing plans to secure 260,000 advanced GPUs by 2030 and has introduced AI-related laws. The ministry also plans to roll out “AI for Everyone” starting as early as November, aiming to keep it free through 2028.
