Democratic Party lawmaker Han Jun-ho (한준호) said he will shift the current regulatory system in a more flexible direction to promote the physical AI industry and speed up processing of related legislation.

Han, floor spokesman for the ruling party on the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, said at an event titled "Physical AI Global Top Strategy" held at the National Assembly Members' Office Building in Seoul on Aug. 25 that the law is failing to keep up with technology. "The reality is that the law cannot keep up with technology right now," he said. "The government's method of regulation needs to change."

Han currently chairs the Information and Communications Broadcasting and Media Legislation Review Subcommittee (Bill Subcommittee No. 2), which reviews bills related to broadcasting, media and information and communications in the committee.

"After taking charge of the subcommittee, I even said we should separate the broadcasting sector into Subcommittee No. 3," he said. He said the intent was to split it off because the broadcasting sector could become an obstacle to processing related laws.

He also said he would work with the government to quickly process laws in this field within Subcommittee No. 2. "I will work hard to help in step with the association and the lawmakers here," he said.

He urged active policy proposals from industry and academia. "You need to pass along many opinions and tasks so that we can solve them," he said. "If you pass along the content presented and discussed today as tasks, I will do my best to resolve them quickly," he added.

A bill titled the Special Act on Promoting and Supporting the Development of Physical Artificial Intelligence, sponsored by Democratic Party lawmaker Hwang Jeong-a (황정아), is pending in the committee. The bill includes provisions to provide industry support and regulatory exemptions, while creating a separate regulatory framework for physical AI including performance certification, safety management and mandatory insurance enrollment.
