MSIT launches support programme to build university research security management systems
South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT will launch a support programme to strengthen research security capabilities at universities. The ministry held a briefing on June 5 and outlined plans to help universities establish their own research security management systems and sustainable operating foundations. The programme will run from July 2026 to December 2028, selecting eight universities and providing up to about 500 million won per university annually, with lower support this year.

Son Hoon of KAIST wins June Korea Science and Technology Award for infrastructure sensor
Son Hoon (손훈), a professor at KAIST, has been selected as the June winner of South Korea\'s Science and Technology Award for developing sensor technology that detects small movements in medium and small social infrastructure facilities in real time. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation said the technology supports disaster warnings and improves infrastructure safety by combining millimeter-wave radar and MEMS accelerometers to measure acceleration, tilt and displacement with high precision at low cost.

Lee Yoon-sil named May winner of Korea science and technology award for mitochondria research
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea selected Lee Yoon-sil (이윤실), a professor at Seoul National University Graduate School of Dentistry, as the May recipient of the Korea Science and Technology Award. The selection cited her work on using mitochondria to promote bone formation and regeneration while reducing side effects and treatment gaps associated with existing therapies. Her research was featured on the cover of Cell Metabolism in February 2023.
