Kim Jong-cheol says platforms must step up youth protection, warns of broader administrative penalties

Kim Jong-cheol (김종철), chairman of the Broadcast, Media and Communications Commission, said he would strengthen platforms’ responsibility to protect youths, including by expanding administrative penalties, to prevent risky contacts involving children and teenagers on services such as KakaoTalk Open Chat. He made the comments during a parliamentary audit after questions from lawmaker Lee Jung-heon (이정헌), who cited surveys and an experiment showing minors’ exposure to strangers and requests for personal information.

Kim Jong-cheol joins G7 ministers meeting to discuss online protection for minors

South Korea\'s Broadcasting, Media and Communications Commission said its chairman, Kim Jong-cheol, attended a G7 digital and technology ministers meeting by video on Oct. 20 and discussed international cooperation to protect minors online. The meeting, proposed by France\'s minister for AI and digital affairs, included G7 members and five invited countries. France proposed a global science platform, research and database sharing.

Calls grow to expand broadcasting development fund into audiovisual media development fund including OTT

Debate over restructuring South Korea’s Broadcasting and Communications Development Fund has stalled for years, as some now call for expanding it into an “audiovisual media development fund” that also covers OTT services and platforms. Seoul National University professor Hong Jong-yoon proposed broadening contributors and using the money for regional and smaller media support and content diversity. Separately, calls persist to merge the fund with the Information and Communications Promotion Fund, a move repeatedly recommended by government evaluators.
