With Apple set to release the iPhone 18 on Sept. 18, users are being urged to beware false and deceptive advertisements claiming additional discounts on mobile phone bills.

The Broadcasting Media and Communications Commission on Monday urged caution, saying messages spreading mainly through online communities and messengers that “from today you can receive an additional 25 percent discount on your mobile phone bill” contain information that is not true.

Mobile users can currently use the “optional contract discount” scheme, which provides a 25 percent discount on service fees if they sign a contract with a carrier instead of receiving device subsidies.

The commission explained there is no system under which carriers provide an additional 25 percent discount on top of the optional contract discount. A “mandatory contract discount” scheme that offered an additional 25 to 30 percent discount on service fees, on top of device subsidies, in exchange for using mobile services for a certain period was previously operated but has been abolished since 2015.

The commission stressed that messages about mobile service fee discounts passed on through acquaintances or group chat rooms could be false information from an unclear source. It explained users should not contact phone numbers included in such messages or seek consultations.
