Hands-on with Alibaba\'s Qwen3.8-27B: strong performance but thinks too much
Alibaba has open-sourced Qwen3.8-27B, a multimodal AI model sized to run locally on higher-spec MacBook Pros or Mac Studios. Simon Willison, who developed Datasette and co-developed Django, published a hands-on review. He said the model’s performance is impressive but criticised its default “xhigh” deep-thinking setting for taking too long on simple tasks. He cited a 21-minute image-generation response and noted slower speeds even on high-end hardware.

Desktop GPU prices may rise again. What to buy now and which models to consider
Expectations are growing that desktop GPU prices could rise again in the second half of 2026, driven by higher video memory prices and price adjustments in regional distribution networks. Japan distributor CFD warned of possible price increases for Gigabyte graphics cards of 20 to 40 percent. Prices for 16GB models have risen more than smaller-memory products, while some midrange models such as RTX 5070 and Radeon RX 9070 have been relatively stable.

Nvidia RTX graphics cards may rise again as memory price hike rumours rattle PC industry
Nvidia RTX graphics card prices could rise again as reports suggest the company is pushing to raise prices for GDDR6 and GDDR7 memory kits used in its GPUs. The move is linked to a prolonged memory supply crunch that is lifting manufacturing costs across the PC industry. Any change has not been confirmed for consumers, but higher kit prices could push up production costs and retail prices. Similar pressure is also affecting other PC product categories.
