Nvidia's midrange graphics card GeForce RTX 3060 has reappeared in the U.S. retail market. As rising memory prices add to pressure in the PC components market, a strategy is emerging to supply a proven older graphics card again, but questions are being raised about price competitiveness.
On June 30 local time, IT outlet TechRadar reported that U.S. online retailer Newegg listed RTX 3060 products again from major manufacturers such as Asus, MSI and Gigabyte.
The re-release is seen as linked to recent increases in memory prices across the broader PC and console hardware markets. As prices for memory-based components including graphics cards rise overall, some analysis says re-supplying an already proven existing GPU has become a practical alternative to producing new products.
The issue is the price. Some RTX 3060 products listed on Newegg began selling from $339.99, which is $10 above the recommended retail price at the time the RTX 3060 was first launched. Some models are reported to be listed at prices above $400. At this price range, direct comparison with the latest generation RTX 5060 is unavoidable.
The RTX 3060 was launched years ago but still maintains strong popularity. In Steam hardware and software surveys it has long held the spot as the most used graphics card, and it also kept the top position in the May survey this year.
With 12GB of video memory, the RTX 3060 is seen as still offering solid gaming performance at 1080p and 1440p resolutions. Reviews have said that using DLSS upscaling technology can also run the latest games relatively smoothly.
Some point out that it is less competitive at current prices. TechRadar described the RTX 3060's reappearance as "like a Frankenstein revived in a mess" and said it is an example that shows the confusing situation in the current PC hardware market.
User reactions are similar. On Reddit, one user said it would not be easy to buy an RTX 3060 for $339.99 even for an Nvidia fan and argued that at that price it is better to choose the RTX 5060. Another user said the biggest advantage of the RTX 3060 is effectively its 12GB of video memory, adding it could still be an attractive option for users doing AI inference or generative AI work.
Many also say the product itself does not lack performance. The RTX 3060 still provides sufficient performance for general gaming and content creation, but analysis says consumers are more likely to choose the new product because the latest RTX 5060 supports new functions such as Multi Frame Generation at a similar price.
The industry is also raising the possibility that re-releases of older graphics cards such as the RTX 3060 could increase while memory prices continue to rise.
Consumers need to consider not only performance but also price and whether the latest functions are supported. The outlook is that how much market response the RTX 3060's return draws will depend on price competitiveness.
