Samsung Display has surpassed cumulative shipments of 5 million QD-OLED panels for monitors. The company said on April 9 it achieved the milestone in March, about 4 years after it began the world’s first mass production of QD-OLED in late 2021. It said the average annual growth rate over the 4 years from 2021 through 2025 exceeded 320 percent.

QD-OLED is a technology that embeds nanometer-sized semiconductor particles called quantum dots in the panel. Unlike conventional OLEDs that use a color filter to produce color, light from a blue OLED passes through a quantum-dot light-emitting layer and is converted into red and green light. The optical characteristics of quantum dots increase color purity, delivering strong performance in color accuracy, color volume and color luminance. The technology also disperses light widely, providing a wide viewing angle and fast response time.

Samsung Display is working with 20 global customers, including Acer, AOC/Philips, ASUS, Dell, GIGABYTE, HP, Lenovo, MSI and Samsung Electronics, to supply about 150 types of QD-OLED monitors.

It has recently begun full-scale supply of a 34-inch 360Hz QD-OLED with a V (Vertical)-stripe (Stripe) pixel structure that improves text readability to global monitor makers. It also said it applied its low-reflection, high-durability film, Quantum Black (QuantumBlack), which reduces light reflection by 20 percent compared with existing products and raises panel hardness to 3H, to all new products launched this year. Samsung Display’s share of shipments of self-emissive displays for monitors last year was 75 percent, based on Omdia tallies.

Son Dong-il (손동일), head of the Large Display Business Unit at Samsung Display and a vice president, said, "The rapid growth and overwhelming market share of QD-OLED stem from its unrivaled competitiveness in picture quality and product quality, and stable production capability." He said, "We will continue to present differentiated technologies and products closely aligned with customers and the market, changing the landscape and flow of the monitor market and leading the technology transition."
