Kakao to end Kanana after 17 months, shifts AI focus to KakaoTalk
Kakao will end its standalone AI service Kanana about 17 months after launch, closing its app and PC services on Oct. 15. The company will wrap up AI experiments run through a separate app and use the technology and user feedback gained in other AI services, including KakaoTalk. Users can back up chat data until Oct. 14, while generated images must be saved individually. After closure, user data will be destroyed under relevant laws and privacy policy.

Kakao expands KakaoTools partners to 10, adds 7 services
Kakao said on Thursday it added services from seven external partners to KakaoTools, its AI agent service within ChatGPT for Kakao. The newly added partners are Daisomall, Looksroo, Spacecloud, Shinsegae Duty Free, Shinhan Card, LF Mall and Cheongyeon. Including OP.GG, Zigbang and HanaTour, which were linked earlier, KakaoTools now has 10 external partners. Kakao said 28 services are connected in total and it plans to keep expanding.

Kakao is prioritising agent services in KakaoTalk that identify user intent and link it to orders, reservations and payments, rather than entering AI infrastructure such as data centres and GPU cloud. CEO Chung Shin-a outlined a plan to start with food delivery through a Coupang Eats tie-up and expand to commerce, reservations and travel. Kakao aims to raise monthly AI users to 10 million by end-2026 and begin monetisation via fees and subscriptions in 2027.
