Intel points to wider sales of lower-grade CPUs as AI-driven demand lifts Q1 results
Intel’s improved first-quarter 2026 performance is being linked to expanded sales of CPUs that would typically be discarded or classified at lower grades. Intel posted revenue of $13.6 billion, up 7 percent from a year earlier, and beat market expectations. Analyst Ben Bajarin said customers actively bought CPUs that would previously be treated as defective or low quality, boosting profitability. The report also cited AMD gains in desktops, laptops and servers.

Why CPUs matter more in the age of AI agents
As AI agents spread, AI infrastructure that had been built around GPUs is shifting toward CPUs. Amazon News described why CPUs are becoming more important in agent environments. It said earlier debates focused on chips used to train large models, such as AI accelerators like Trainium and GPUs optimized for parallel processing. Agent AI repeatedly handles tasks beyond inference, including logic, file management, network calls and code execution, which are CPU workloads.
