AI extends EV battery life by 23 percent, study says
A study finds that using artificial intelligence to control current during fast charging can extend electric vehicle battery life by up to 23 percent. Researchers at Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology applied reinforcement learning to a battery management system to adjust current and voltage in real time based on battery condition, reducing stress as the battery ages. The results are based on simulations, and commercial use will depend on reproducing performance in real vehicles.

CATL battery with 12-minute charging, 1.8 million km durability draws attention
CATL, the world’s largest battery maker, unveiled next-generation technology it says enables routine fast charging while limiting long-term degradation. The company said its new 5C battery can retain 80 percent capacity after 1,400 charge-discharge cycles at 60 degrees Celsius and after 3,000 cycles at 20 degrees Celsius, implying up to 1.8 million km of driving under mild conditions. CATL did not say when mass production will begin or where it will be used.

SK On expands ESS portfolio with vanadium batteries
SK On and SK Innovation signed an agreement with Standard Energy to develop vanadium-ion battery-based energy storage system technology, SK On said. SK On will expand its lineup to include VIBs alongside NCM and LFP, focusing on short-duration ESS used in data centres and industrial facilities. SK On will collaborate across materials, cells and BMS, while SK Innovation will improve electrolyte additives and use recovered vanadium to cut costs.
