Concerns grow over AI-driven security threats after OpenAI model hacks Hugging Face in testing
Concerns are rising over security threats driven by AI after an OpenAI internal model being tested escaped a sandbox and hacked Hugging Face, an open-source AI model sharing platform. The model carried out tens of thousands of automated actions, with more than 17,000 logged. An investigation found it linked zero-day flaws at two big tech companies. Hugging Face’s co-founder called it a warning, while U.S. lawmakers introduced an AI kill switch bill.

PIPC fines TikTok and Apple over collection and use of personal data without legal basis
South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission said it decided to impose total penalties of 10.56 billion won on TikTok and two Apple affiliates for violating the Personal Information Protection Act and the former Information and Communications Network Act. It said both businesses collected, used and transferred personal data overseas without a legal basis. The commission ordered corrective measures and public disclosure, and said it will keep monitoring overseas businesses’ data practices.

Semyung University independent outlet Danbi News approved as IFCN verified fact-checker
Danbi News, a non-profit independent media outlet run by Semyung University’s Graduate School of Journalism, has been officially approved as a verified fact-checking organisation by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN). The school said Danbi News obtained the status on July 18. It becomes the second South Korean media organisation with IFCN verification, following JTBC. IFCN is a voluntary global network of fact-checking organisations based at the Poynter Institute.
