The Broadcasting Media Communications Commission reported major policy results in broadcasting, media and telecommunications at a cabinet meeting on Monday, marking the first anniversary of the launch of the People’s Sovereignty government. The commission said it has pursued policies aimed at clearing issues accumulated over two years and realising media sovereignty and a basic society. It cited broadcaster relicensing, decree revisions, measures on public responsibility, handset subsidy rules, World Cup joint broadcasts, platform obligations and home-shopping reforms.

Parliament moves to tighten AI watermark rules, targeting distribution and tampering
South Korea\'s parliament is moving to strengthen rules on AI-generated content watermarks, with lawmakers proposing amendments to the AI Basic Act and the Information and Communications Network Act. The bills would specify how watermarks must be embedded and introduce penalties for tampering, including fines of up to 20 million won and administrative fines of up to 10 million won. The push reflects regulatory gaps in distribution and growing concerns over deepfake abuse.

Bamiteongwi fines Lotte Card 11,250,000 won for violating CI safety measures
The Broadcasting Media Communications Commission imposed an 11,250,000 won administrative fine on Lotte Card for violating obligations to protect linked information (CI). The commission said it also approved a recommendation for improvements after a special inspection conducted from September to November last year following a Lotte Card data leak incident. The inspection found logs containing CI and resident registration numbers were exposed without encryption during operation of its pay service.
