Overseas short-form drama platforms fall into youth protection blind spot, regulator says it will improve surveys

South Korea\'s short-form drama market is growing rapidly, but overseas operators are falling outside youth protection requirements, a lawmaker said. Lee Jung-heon (이정헌) urged improvements to the youth protection framework, warning regulation must not focus only on domestic firms. He said the regulator\'s Android-focused panel surveys and use of monthly users could exclude overseas companies. Officials pledged closer monitoring, focused reviews and changes to survey methods in cooperation with related agencies.

Baek Kyung-hoon says onsite probes possible based on signs of hacking alone

South Korea can now launch onsite investigations based solely on signs of hacking, even without a company report, Vice Prime Minister and Science Minister Baek Kyung-hoon (배경훈) said at a parliamentary audit on Oct. 6. He said revisions to the Information and Communications Network Act took effect on Oct. 1. The amended law creates a review committee and allows decisions on probe scope and methods. It also strengthens penalties, notification rules and security governance.

Bill proposes youth \'shutdown\' feature for generative AI, letting parents set usage time

A South Korean lawmaker plans to introduce a bill that would require operators of generative AI-based interactive services to provide tools to restrict usage time for minors. Under the proposal, minors or their legal representatives could request limits on usage duration and time slots. Providers would also have to verify users’ age and identity and display warnings and usage history. Companies that fail to comply could face fines of up to 30 million won.
