South Korea's Broadcasting Media Communications Commission and the Korea Communications Media Foundation said an ICT Services Transparency Center officially launched on Wednesday under the revised Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection.

The revised Network Act, which took effect in July, established the legal basis for setting up the transparency center. The commission said it placed the center within the Korea Communications Media Foundation to carry out related work.

The center will support the activities of fact-checking groups and handle research on fact-checking, user education and international cooperation. It will also support work to verify transparency reports submitted by large ICT service providers.

Commission Chairman Kim Jong-cheol (김종철) said he would review whether large ICT service providers are faithfully fulfilling their legal obligations and support fact-checking activities while respecting the independence and autonomy of the private sector.
