Vitalik Buterin says only algorithmic stablecoins are real DeFi

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin set out his view of what constitutes decentralised finance, saying only algorithmic stablecoins meet the definition. He said an ETH-backed algorithmic stablecoin should shift dollar counterparty risk to market makers and that RWA-based stablecoins require heavy collateralisation and strict decentralisation. Buterin said deposit services using USDC are not DeFi, criticised overreliance on fiat-backed stablecoins, and urged more transparency and new staking approaches.
