BNK Financial strengthens consumer protection governance, guarantees two-year CCO term

BNK Financial Group has set up financial consumer protection committees under the boards of Busan Bank and Kyongnam Bank and will strengthen the independence and authority of its chief consumer protection officer. The board will directly decide on the appointment and dismissal of the CCO, whose term will be guaranteed at 2 years. The group is also running an internal contest to identify and improve practices and procedures deemed unfavorable to consumers.

Google Alphafold team effectively dismantled, staff reassigned to Gemini

Google DeepMind has effectively dismantled the team behind Alphafold, the Financial Times reported on July 29. The report said Google reassigned core Alphafold staff and most original paper authors to other units, with some already leaving the company. DeepMind began Alphafold in 2018 and was credited in 2020 with effectively solving the protein-folding problem. In 2024, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper won the Nobel chemistry prize for the research.

NIPA launches open-source AI, software community drive to support ecosystem expansion

The National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) is supporting 15 developer communities to help invigorate South Korea's open-source AI and software ecosystem. NIPA said it held the 2026 Open Source AI and Software Community launch event on July 25 in Seoul and began support for the communities selected through an open call. Support includes participation in open-source conferences and seminars, cloud-based GPU and server resources, and collaborative spaces.
