The Broadcasting Media Communication Commission said on Sept. 18 it will bring forward by 4 months the start of mandatory separate storage of resident registration numbers and linked information (CI), to January next year from May.
The commission held its 36th plenary meeting on the day and approved a revision to a notice amending the "Standards on the generation and processing of linked information" to reflect the plan.
CI is electronic information created by encrypting a resident registration number to identify a specific individual online. The commission said it decided to require separate storage of the two types of information to block the possibility that resident registration numbers and CI could be leaked together and to strengthen security.
The implementation date was initially deferred to May 1, 2027 after businesses asked for preparation time for rebuilding and verifying technical infrastructure. Under the revised notice, the separate-storage obligation will take effect from Jan. 1, 2027.
