Baek Kyung-hoon says he will step up investment to develop next-generation SMRs

Deputy Prime Minister and Science Minister Baek Kyung-hoon attended the 2026 nuclear industry New Year reception in Seoul on Friday morning and exchanged greetings with senior figures in the sector. The event, themed "Nuclear power opening the AI era," drew about 300 participants, including Deputy Climate, Energy and Environment Minister Lee Ho-hyun and Nuclear Safety and Security Commission Chairman Choi Won-ho. Baek said the ministry would strengthen investment in next-generation SMR development.

Google Maps adds Gemini support for walking and cycling modes

Google has expanded features in its Google Maps app so pedestrians and cyclists can use the Gemini AI assistant, TechCrunch reported on Jan. 29. Users can ask Gemini questions while walking and cyclists can request information such as estimated arrival times or meeting times, or give commands such as sending a text that they will be 10 minutes late. The update also supports follow-up questions in a conversational format. The feature is available globally on iOS and will be introduced to Android in phases.

Microsoft highlights rising Copilot AI usage amid concerns over AI investment

Microsoft posted $81.3 billion in revenue for the previous quarter, up 17 percent from a year earlier, but its shares fell amid investor concern over increased cloud investment. CEO Satya Nadella said usage of the company’s Copilot AI assistant is rising. TechCrunch reported Microsoft’s capital spending hit $88.2 billion in the last fiscal year and stands at $72.4 billion so far this year.
