U.S. senator urges ban on elected officials issuing meme coins

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has proposed barring the president, members of Congress and their spouses from issuing or sponsoring their own digital assets. She cited the need to address conflicts of interest, mentioning meme coins linked to Donald Trump and Melania Trump. Gillibrand said elected officials and spouses should not issue meme coins and argued the restriction could win bipartisan support. She tied the proposal to talks over the Senate’s Clarity market-structure bill.
