KOSPI enters 7,000 era as concentration and leverage risks grow
South Korea\'s KOSPI index crossed 7,000 for the first time, driven by semiconductor gains, expanded AI infrastructure investment, foreign inflows, retail ETF demand and capital market reforms. The index hit an intraday high of 7,426.60 before closing at 7,384.56 on May 6. Market capitalisation rose to a record 6.06 quadrillion won. Analysts flagged rising concentration in large caps, overheating signals, growing margin debt and external risks such as oil, rates and geopolitics.

Bitcoin to KOSPI? Why overseas crypto investors are piling into South Korean stocks
Overseas cryptocurrency investors are increasing trading in products linked to South Korea\'s KOSPI 200, Cryptopolitan reported, citing activity on decentralised derivatives exchange Hyperliquid. Data show about 63 percent of KOSPI 200 positions were profitable, while open interest remained small at $121,000. The report links the shift to the index\'s sharp gains, policy changes including a value-up programme and dividend tax cuts, relatively modest valuations, and high semiconductor weight seen as tied to AI.
