FBI, power plants hit in worst hacking incidents of first half 2026
Cyberattacks in 2026 are spreading across national infrastructure, public data and global companies, prompting warnings that security threats are entering a new phase. TechCrunch said major incidents this year show simultaneous increases in personal data leaks, supply-chain hacks and attacks on critical infrastructure. Cases cited include alleged mishandling of U.S. Social Security data, attacks on European power and water facilities, disruptions at large firms, open-source supply-chain compromises and an intrusion into part of the FBI’s monitoring systems.

7-Eleven data breach exposes 185,000 people, including names, addresses and SSNs
A data breach at 7-Eleven affected the personal information of about 185,000 people, including names, dates of birth, home addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. The incident is linked to a breach reported in April, and Have I Been Pwned said newly added data confirmed 7-Eleven was hit by an attack combined with a ransom demand. ShinyHunters was named as the suspected group. Some filings said SSNs and driver’s license information were also exposed.

Financial scams target psychology over technology as AI voice phishing spreads among retirees
Financial fraud using generative AI is becoming more sophisticated, shifting the focus of asset protection from technical defenses to verifying people. Finextra said conventional phishing checks are no longer enough as AI scams grow harder to distinguish from reality. Criminals can clone voices from short clips and demand urgent transfers, while long-running investment scams steer victims to fake platforms. Typical tactics include urgency, secrecy and pressure to pay immediately, alongside stronger password practices and multi-factor authentication.
