LG Energy Solution converts Tennessee plant to ESS production
LG Energy Solution has expanded its North American energy storage system (ESS) production base to 5 sites. Its joint venture with GM, Ultium Cells, will start producing lithium iron phosphate battery cells for ESS at its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant. The company will convert part of an existing EV battery line and begin full-scale mass production from the second quarter. ESS cells from the Tennessee plant will be supplied via LG’s North American SI unit Vertech.

Meta unveils in-house AI chips after major Nvidia, AMD deals
Meta has unveiled 4 custom chips aimed at AI workloads, CNBC reported on March 11. The company is developing the chips to reduce reliance on Nvidia and AMD and to improve cost efficiency in its own data centres. Meta said the MTIA 300 chip is already deployed to support core ranking and recommendation work, and that MTIA 400, 450 and 500 will handle generative AI tasks.

SoftBank to invest $33 billion to build huge gas power plant in United States
SoftBank is moving to build what is described as the largest gas power plant in the United States, TechCrunch reported on Wednesday. Its subsidiary SB Energy plans a 9.2-gigawatt facility near the Ohio-Kentucky border. The project is valued at $33 billion and could supply electricity to 7.5 million households when completed. TechCrunch also reported the plant may power a data centre SoftBank is building with OpenAI.
