High oil prices, weak won and rising prices put Bank of Korea monetary policy at crossroads
Oil prices and the won-dollar exchange rate have pushed up energy costs, adding to inflation pressure and putting the Bank of Korea’s monetary policy at a crossroads. March consumer prices rose 2.2 percent from a year earlier, with petroleum product prices up 9.9 percent. A rate hold at 2.50 percent is widely expected at the April 10 meeting, but analysts see a chance of a hike later this year if supply-driven inflation persists.
