ETRI aims to develop \'director-level AI scientist\' by 2035, unveils 50th anniversary vision
South Korea\'s Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute said it would challenge itself to develop a \"director-level AI scientist\" by 2035 that can autonomously carry out the full research cycle, from hypothesis setting to experiments, analysis and verification. It also unveiled an AI innovation strategy and plans to focus R&D capabilities on five areas including AI-native 6G and satellite communications, safe artificial general intelligence, immersive space media, physical AI, and public and industrial AI and digital transformation.

Science ministry launches self-driving lab industry-academia-research council to build K-Moonshot foundation
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT said it will hold a launch ceremony on Aug. 11 in Seoul for an industry-academia-research council on self-driving laboratories. The ministry described self-driving labs as platforms that link equipment, robots and AI to automate repeated experiments around the clock. The government sees them as a core foundation for K-Moonshot and plans to build a closed-loop system spanning hypothesis, experiment, analysis and revised hypotheses.

MSIT to work with AMD on AI chips, help Korean NPUs expand globally
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT will cooperate with AMD to expand the domestic AI semiconductor ecosystem, including linking AMD CPUs and GPUs with Korean NPUs to build and test heterogeneous AI computing infrastructure. The ministry said it signed an MOU with AMD in San Francisco. The sides also plan cooperation in AI-based scientific research through NAIS. AMD plans to set up an AI Center of Excellence in South Korea and support university programs and joint research.
