South Korea government, 3 telecoms to recycle critical minerals from scrapped network equipment
South Korea\'s government and the country\'s three mobile carriers will cooperate to promote domestic circulation and reuse of rare earths and other critical minerals contained in scrapped telecommunications equipment. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the climate ministry signed an agreement on June 11 with SK Telecom, KT, LG Uplus, KCA and the Korea Environment Corporation. A pilot project will track disposal and distribution flows and support automation, facilities, and guidelines.

KISO to hold public hearing on self-regulation of false, manipulated information, release guidelines
The Korea Internet Self-Governance Organization (KISO) is moving to set full-scale self-regulation standards for responding to false and manipulated information on platforms ahead of the revised Information and Communications Network Act taking effect in July. KISO will hold a seminar on May 13 at the Korea Press Center with related policy bodies and will for the first time disclose its self-policy guideline. The event will include presentations and a discussion session with academics, officials and lawyers.

PIPC holds meeting on how generative AI services handle personal data
South Korea\'s Personal Information Protection Commission on Tuesday held a meeting in Seoul with major domestic and foreign generative AI companies and experts to discuss improving privacy policies and strengthening transparency. The watchdog said generative AI services were relatively weak on adequacy, readability and accessibility, citing vague descriptions of data items, legal grounds, retention periods and third-party recipients. It said it plans to supplement its privacy-policy writing guidelines based on the discussions.
