Kakao labor talks break down again, raising prospect of first HQ strike

Kakao’s headquarters labor and management failed to reach a final agreement in a second mediation session on May 27 at the Gyeonggi Provincial Labor Relations Commission, granting the union legal rights to strike. The two sides remain divided over wage hikes and performance compensation, including bonuses and institutionalising RSUs. With the headquarters included, five Kakao entities now hold dispute rights after a strike vote passed. The union is seen as unlikely to launch an immediate full strike.

Kakao holds Kanana Scholar Colloquium with leading universities to discuss advancing AI

Kakao is strengthening industry-academia cooperation to advance its services by sharing the latest artificial intelligence technologies and research results with researchers from major South Korean universities. The company said it held the academic exchange program Kanana Scholar Colloquium on May 22 at its AI Campus in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. Kakao introduced in-house model advancement research and discussed cooperation opportunities across key areas including foundation models, agentic AI, multimodal models and AI safety.

Kakao to adopt Google DeepMind\'s SynthID to block AI deepfakes, false information

Kakao is partnering with Google DeepMind to apply the SynthID digital watermarking solution to its in-house AI model, Kanana, to improve transparency for AI-generated content and prevent misuse such as deepfakes. Kakao said the partnership is an early global adoption case and the first among Asian companies. The company plans to roll out SynthID from the second half of this year, starting with the KakaoTalk Kanana Template feature.
