Korean media fall behind global platforms; original content expansion urged

A study found the overall competitiveness of South Korea\'s major media services is lower than that of global platforms, and called for narrowing gaps in capital and content investment and integrating fragmented domestic platforms. In a survey of 32 experts, 93.8 percent agreed Korean media services face a crisis from competition with global platforms. User surveys showed domestic paid OTT services were seen at 57 to 73 percent of Netflix’s competitiveness, with expanding original content cited as the top priority.

South Korea\'s 2024 digital industry sales rise 9.3 percent to 1.378 trillion won

South Korea’s digital industry posted sales of 1.378 trillion won in 2024, up 9.3 percent from a year earlier, a government survey showed. The sector accounted for 15.2 percent of total industry sales of 9.038 trillion won and rose by more than 100 trillion won for a second straight year. Digital-based industries led sales, while digital-related industries fell 3.1 percent. Digital maturity rose to 75.4 percent.

AI full-stack self-reliance is an illusion; focus investment on models and cloud, report says

South Korea cannot achieve AI full-stack self-reliance in the short term because of high foreign dependence across the technology stack, from semiconductors and accelerators to application software, a report said. KISDI urged resetting strategy toward minimum dependence and maximum competitiveness, with near-term 집중 investment in AI models and cloud. A survey of 38 experts found high overseas dependence in six of nine stacks and below-average competitiveness across all areas.
