Optimal plan notification countdown stirs telecom industry
From next month, mobile carriers in South Korea will analyse subscribers’ usage and proactively notify them of more suitable rate plans under the optimal plan notification system. Users are expected to benefit by reducing cases of keeping plans that are more expensive than their actual usage. The telecom industry, however, expects pressure from potential declines in average revenue per user and costs to build related systems. The system will first apply to SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus.

Trust barrier remains in 6.81 million used phone market despite safe certification
More than 70 percent of phones taken out of use do not enter South Korea’s used phone market, a report showed, citing concerns about personal data leaks and distrust of transaction processes. The market grew to 6.81 million units last year, but the share of end-of-use devices considered sellable was 27.9 percent. The government introduced a safe-trade certification scheme in May last year, yet industry officials say awareness, clarity and practical support remain insufficient.

Radio policy society says spectrum fees should factor in earnings and capex
A proposal called for fees for assigning and re-assigning radio spectrum to be designed to take account of operators\' earnings and capital investment as the AI and 6G era approaches. The Korea Radio Policy Society held an academic conference on Aug. 25 on the direction of radio policy amid AI expansion. Speakers discussed global trends in AI infrastructure and spectrum policy and warned that spectrum fees set too low or too high could distort demand, deter competition or raise consumer prices.
