South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT said on Oct. 24 that two South Korean experts were elected to key posts in the operating groups under the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Telecommunications and Information Working Group (TEL).

APEC TEL is a consultative body that promotes ICT development and cooperation in policy and regulation in the Asia-Pacific region. It is pursuing policy and technical cooperation among member economies centered on three operating groups: Digital Economy Steering Group (DPSG), Security and Trust Steering Group (STSG) and Conformance and Interoperability Steering Group (CISG).

Jang Ju-dong (장주동), a researcher at the National Radio Research Agency, was elected as CISG secretary. Park Jung-eun (박정은), a researcher at the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI), was elected as DPSG deputy secretary. The term runs for two years from 2027 to 2028. South Korea also secured a key post this time after Kang Ha-yeon was elected TEL co-chair in 2024 and served for two years from 2025.

The ministry said, "The fact that our country's experts have continued to advance to key posts in APEC TEL reflects a high evaluation of the expertise accumulated in ICT policy and technology." It added, "We will continue to strengthen policy and regulatory cooperation in the ICT sector and support our companies' entry into overseas markets and revitalise regional ICT trade."
