Apple has not abandoned foldable Mac development; soft keyboard is key
Apple’s foldable Mac may remain a long-term project rather than being discontinued, an analysis said, citing the difficulty of matching a laptop-level keyboard experience when the screen is unfolded. The report said a dynamic hardware keyboard that changes layout by app is one proposed step, while the ultimate goal could be using the display itself as a keyboard. Apple has previously outlined related patented approaches, including haptics and surface texture cues.

Apple cancels development of 18-inch foldable iPad-Mac hybrid device
Apple has cancelled plans to develop a large-screen foldable iPad-Mac hybrid device, a report said. A research note by market tracker Omdia said Apple dropped a plan for a 16.1 to 18-inch foldable MacBook. The product had been widely rumoured and was once discussed as a possible 2026 launch before expectations shifted to 2028. Apple has not issued an official response.
