Apple has cancelled plans to develop a large-screen foldable iPad-Mac hybrid device, a report said.

NineToFiveMac reported on Sept. 3, citing a recent research note from market research firm Omdia, that Apple's future Mac and iPad roadmap includes the cancellation of a 16.1 to 18-inch foldable MacBook plan.

The product appears to refer to a foldable large-screen device of about 18 to 20 inches that has long been the subject of industry rumours. The market has continued to speculate that it was being developed as a combination of iPad and Mac. Some expectations said a possible 2026 launch was later pushed back to 2028.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman (마크 거먼) described it as a priority for Apple Chief Executive John Ternus (존 터너스). Gurman also said at the time that the product might not end up being released. The Omdia document explicitly states: "The plan to launch a foldable MacBook sized 16.1 inches to 18 inches has been cancelled."

Taken together with earlier rumours, the cancelled product appears to be the same foldable iPad-Mac hybrid device that Gurman and others have mentioned. Apple has not provided an official position on the product.

Some raise the possibility that Apple has not abandoned its entire foldable lineup, but is adjusting plans for a large-screen foldable product while watching market reaction. In particular, there is speculation that Apple could resume development of a large-screen foldable iPad-MacBook hybrid after checking market reaction to a foldable iPhone Ultra.

Price is also cited as a variable. With product prices rising sharply amid a recent memory crisis, some analysis says Apple may have judged it difficult to secure business viability for a very high-priced, innovative large-screen foldable device.

The cancellation report suggests Apple's foldable strategy may first unfold around the iPhone. A foldable iPhone has been discussed as Apple's first foldable product, and the development and timing of a large-screen foldable iPad-Mac device could still be decided again depending on market response.

Omdia's roadmap also shows Apple has kept its broad direction of adopting OLED displays across Macs and iPads, while readjusting which products will use OLED and the specific display technologies. Apple is also reported to have cancelled plans to develop a 14.4 to 16.1-inch OLED MacBook.
