IEA criticises EU for slow electrification and continued fossil fuel reliance
The head of the International Energy Agency has publicly criticised the European Union for moving too slowly on electrification, despite the energy shock that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He noted electricity accounts for about 23 percent of the EU’s total energy use and said heating and transport have not advanced as expected. EU officials also acknowledged ongoing reliance on imported fossil fuels, while the European Commission plans tax changes to support heat pumps and electric vehicles.

Data centre water use could double by 2030 as AI reshapes cooling methods
Data centre water use is rising rapidly as AI spreads, making changes to cooling infrastructure a key industry task. International Energy Agency data cited by TechRadar put annual consumption at about 560 billion litres, with a recent report projecting it could reach up to 1.2 trillion litres by 2030. The article outlines alternatives such as closed-loop liquid cooling, direct chip and node cooling, high-temperature water systems and waste-heat reuse, alongside site selection strategies to ease pressure on freshwater supplies.

Nvidia unveils hot-water cooling design to cut data centre water use
Nvidia unveiled a new hot-water, closed-loop cooling system it says can almost eliminate water use inside data centres by circulating coolant for the life of a facility. The system uses about 45 degrees Celsius coolant that exits around 55 degrees before being cooled externally and recirculated. Nvidia says suitable climates could cut on-site water use by 100%. The article says overall AI water use also depends on electricity generation and semiconductor manufacturing.
