KOSPI breaks 6,600 intraday for first time, South Korean market cap tops 6,000 trillion won
South Korea\'s KOSPI rose above 6,600 during trading for the first time, lifting the combined market value of the country\'s stock markets past 6,000 trillion won. At 10:12 a.m. on April 27, the KOSPI was up 1.79 percent at 6,591.41 after touching a record 6,603.01. The Korea Exchange put total market capitalisation at 6,032 trillion won, led by the KOSPI market at 5,354 trillion won.

South Korea Q1 economic growth at 1.7 percent, highest in 5 and a half years
South Korea\'s real gross domestic product grew 1.7 percent in the first quarter, the Bank of Korea said on Wednesday, nearly double its February forecast of 0.9 percent. Exports rose 5.1 percent, the biggest increase since the third quarter of 2020, and net exports contributed 1.1 percentage points to growth. Domestic demand also improved, led by higher investment and consumption.

South Korea\'s national debt rose to a provisional 1304.5 trillion won last year, up 129.4 trillion won from the previous year, according to the 2025 fiscal year national settlement report. The debt-to-GDP ratio climbed to 49.0 percent from 46.0 percent in 2024. The government projected debt will keep rising through 2029, lifting the ratio to 58.0 percent. Weaker growth and fiscal pressures could accelerate the rise.
