Kim Jong-cheol says private broadcasters are backbone of democracy, vows more production support
Kim Jong-cheol (김종철), chairman of the Broadcasting Media and Communications Commission, said on April 17 that private broadcasters have recorded local lives and served as a backbone protecting democratic values. Speaking at the 2026 Korea Private Broadcasting Day ceremony in Ulsan, he also met executives from nine private broadcasters including SBS, KNN, TBC and TBJ to discuss regulatory and policy issues for local broadcasting and to hear industry requests and difficulties.

LG HelloVision expands new businesses amid broadcasting slump, rental growth in focus
LG HelloVision, South Korea’s top cable TV operator, is expanding its non-broadcasting businesses as broadcasting revenue continues to fall. Its rental-related product sales rose 52.2 percent over three years to 329.6 billion won in 2025 and accounted for 26 percent of total revenue last year, surpassing broadcasting. The company’s 2025 revenue rose 5.7 percent to 1.27 trillion won, while operating profit climbed 39 percent.

Google briefs Bamwit on Google Play fee-cut plan during U.S. visit
Google headquarters executives briefed the South Korean government on plans to cut payment fees on the Google Play app market. The Broadcasting Media and Communications Commission said Wilson White, Google\'s global head of public policy, and Kara Bailey, vice president for Android ecosystem strategy, met chair Kim Jong-cheol on April 1 in Gwacheon. Google explained global policy changes announced in March and discussed timing for domestic application.
