Autonomous driving shifts from roads to farms and mines, speeding commercialisation

Autonomous driving is being commercialised more quickly on farms, mines and construction sites than on public roads, where regulation and safety concerns slow progress. In these controlled environments, fewer pedestrians and unexpected variables make deployment easier. John Deere has begun distributing fully autonomous tractors, and Caterpillar says its autonomous mining trucks are 30 percent more productive. Chinese AI firms step up push as Korea sovereign foundation model drive enters new phase

Chinese tech firms are accelerating expansion in the AI market, with Baidu’s Ernie Assistant topping 200 million monthly active users and Kuaishou’s Kling AI reporting 12 million users and more than $20 million in monthly revenue. Alibaba unveiled a major update to its Qwen app. Startups also pressed ahead, including DeepSeek and Moonshot AI. In South Korea, a government-led foundation model project advanced three teams to the next stage and plans an additional selection.
