UK MI5 warns of AI threat as hostile foreign security threats quadruple in 10 years

Britain's MI5 warned that threats from hostile foreign powers such as Russia and Iran are rising sharply and could be intensified by the misuse of AI. MI5 Director General Ken McCallum said the workload from foreign state-related security cases has quadrupled over the past decade and that MI5 is committing more resources than during the Cold War. MI5 also cited arrests linked to Iran and launched an AI Threat Assessment Centre this year.

South Korean stocks plunge, market cap sheds 389 trillion won; Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix account for 228 trillion

A sharp selloff in South Korean stocks cut the combined market capitalisation of the KOSPI and KOSDAQ by more than 389 trillion won in a day, data showed. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix together accounted for about 228 trillion won of the decline. Both stocks fell sharply, with SK Hynix dropping below 1 quadrillion won in intraday market value. The KOSPI slid to the 5,500 level intraday as foreign investors extended net selling.
