[Digital Today reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] Apple has classified the 2017 12-inch MacBook as an “obsolete service” product. This means all 12-inch MacBook models are now excluded from Apple’s official repair and service support. The sixth-generation iPad and BeatsX wireless earphones were also added to the list.

On Oct. 14 local time, IT outlet NineToFiveMac reported that Apple recently added the 2017 MacBook Retina 12-inch, the sixth-generation iPad and BeatsX to its obsolete service products list.

With the move, the 12-inch MacBook lineup has been classified as obsolete service through its last model. Apple previously included the 2015 and 2016 12-inch MacBook models on the same list, and by adding the 2017 version it has concluded official service support for the lineup.

Apple distinguishes between vintage and obsolete service products based on when sales ended. Products that are more than 5 years but less than 7 years after sales ended are classified as vintage. Repairs may be possible at this stage, but service can be limited depending on parts availability.

Products that are more than 7 years after sales ended are classified as obsolete service products. In that case, Apple in principle does not provide official services such as hardware repairs. Users of the products newly added to the list have therefore become less likely to receive repair support through Apple’s official channels.

The 2017 12-inch MacBook is notable as the last model in the lineup. Apple emphasized portability and design with the 12-inch MacBook, but it did not achieve the sales results the market expected. Still, it has continued to draw interest among users who prefer light weight and a small size.

The list also includes the Wi-Fi model and the Wi-Fi plus cellular model of the sixth-generation iPad. BeatsX models in several colors, including Bund Red, Defiant Black-Red, Deep Black, Pure White and Sky Blue, were also moved to obsolete service status.

Apple’s move shows a trend of ending official support for older devices. The 12-inch MacBook, in particular, has now fully fallen outside official repair support as even the last model has been added to the obsolete service list.
