Australia to scrap 50 percent long-term capital gains discount for crypto, other assets from July 2027

Australia will overhaul its capital gains tax regime for assets including cryptocurrencies, abolishing a 50 percent discount for holdings kept longer than 12 months. The new system takes effect on July 1, 2027 under a tax amendment law enacted in 2026 and covers assets held by individual investors such as stocks and real estate. It introduces cost base adjustments and a minimum 30 percent tax approach. Transitional rules split gains before and after the switch date.

Mplus wins Supreme Court patent infringement case over electrode stacking

Mplus has won a final victory in a legal dispute over a core patent in the secondary battery assembly process. The Supreme Court's First Civil Division on July 16 dismissed appeals by both sides in Mplus' lawsuit seeking an injunction against patent infringement by Seongwon Enertech, formerly Yuil Enerttech. The ruling finalised the appellate court judgment, including 11 billion won in damages.
