DeepSeek launches coding AI model 99 percent cheaper than Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8

Chinese AI startup DeepSeek on July 31 launched its new V4 Flash coding model, positioning it as a high value option. Axios reported the model performed close to Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8 in complex coding and autonomous software tasks, and led the Arena front-end coding leaderboard. Claude Opus 4.8 costs $25 per minute of output, while DeepSeek offers V4 Flash for about 28 cents, about 99 percent cheaper.

Ruby on Rails patches critical CVSS 9.5 flaw, urges update

Ruby-based web development framework Ruby on Rails has released a patch for a serious vulnerability that could allow unauthenticated attackers to execute remote code, SecurityWeek reported. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-66066 and rated 9.5 on the CVSS scale, involves arbitrary file reads that could expose secrets and enable lateral movement. Administrators urged users to update affected Active Storage versions and raise libvips to at least 8.13.

Russia expands cryptocurrency mining ban to Moscow

Russia has added Moscow, the Moscow region and parts of the Kursk region to areas where cryptocurrency mining is banned. The restrictions take effect on Aug. 15 and will remain in place until Dec. 31, 2032, Cointelegraph reported. The move follows Resolution No. 936 signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on July 25, 2026, amending an earlier mining restriction order issued in December 2024.
