The Broadcast Media and Telecommunications Deliberation Commission held a plenary meeting on Sept. 21 and appointed 45 members to special committees in five areas, it said.

The commission's special committees are statutory bodies established under the Act on the Establishment and Operation of the Broadcast Media and Telecommunications Commission. They cover five areas: broadcast advice, advertising advice, broadcast language, telecommunications advice and rights protection.

Each special committee has nine members.

The chairs are Young-joo Jung (정영주), a researcher at Seoul National University's Institute of Communications Research, for the Broadcast Advice Special Committee; Kyung-han Yoo (유경한), a professor in the Department of Media Communication at Jeonbuk National University, for the Advertising Advice Special Committee; Mi-sook Kim (김미숙), an assistant professor at the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Catholic Kwandong University, for the Broadcast Language Special Committee; Uk-han Lee (이욱한), an emeritus professor at Sookmyung Women's University's School of Law, for the Telecommunications Advice Special Committee; and Sung-soo Hong (홍성수), a professor at Sookmyung Women's University's School of Law, for the Rights Protection Special Committee.

Special committee members are made up of experts from fields including academia, the legal profession, the media and medicine.

Participants in the Broadcast Advice Special Committee include Hyun-ja Kwak (곽현자), a former senior researcher at the Korea Communications Standards Commission; Oh-hyun Kwon (권오현), chair of the board of the social cooperative Parti; and Sung-geun Kim (김성근), former head of MBC's Broadcasting Infrastructure Headquarters, as well as Byung-sam Bang (방병삼), former head of YTN's Programming and Production Bureau.

The Advertising Advice Special Committee appointed members including Sung-im Park (박성임), a lawyer at Jipyong LLC; Hyun-mi Son (손현미), a professor at Pusan National University's College of Nursing; and Se-sung Oh (오세성), an adjunct professor in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations at Hallym University.

The Broadcast Language Special Committee includes Chang-sik Park (박창식), a guest editorial writer at News Tomato, and Kwang-yeon Lee (이광연), a YTN anchor. The Telecommunications Advice Special Committee includes Cheon-woo Park (박천우), a partner lawyer at LKB & Partners; Yun-mo Sang (상윤모), an associate professor at Yonsei University's Division of Journalism, PR and Video; and Ju-hyun Hong (홍주현), a professor at Kookmin University's School of Media Advertising.

The Rights Protection Special Committee appointed members including Dong-ho Kim (김동호), policy committee chair at the Korea Federation of Organizations of the Disabled; Han-hee Park (박한희), a lawyer at the public interest and human rights lawyers' group Hope to Make Law; Seok-bin Yoon (윤석빈), deputy head of the Child Rights Convention Research Institute at the Korea Association of Child Welfare; Ye-jeong Jang (장예정), standing executive committee chair of the Coalition for Anti-Discrimination Legislation; and Young-sook Heo (허영숙), head of the Korea Migrant Women's Human Rights Center.

Special committee members will serve a one-year term from next month, beginning on Oct. 1 until Sept. 30, 2027.

The commission said it appointed the members with consideration for expertise and practical experience to quickly handle pending issues accumulated due to delays in its launch and to respond to the changing media environment.
