NCAA urges halt to prediction markets on college sports
The U.S. National Collegiate Athletic Association has moved to curb the spread of prediction markets tied to college sports. It asked the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to immediately halt such markets and strengthen protections. NCAA President Charlie Baker told CFTC Chairman Michael Selik that trading should be paused until strong safeguards for student-athletes are in place. He said rapid growth is increasing harassment and worsening gambling problems, and noted that prediction markets can allow participation from age 18.

Generic Protocol launches private stablecoin GUSD
Generic Protocol will launch GUSD, a stablecoin it describes as private and built on a new revenue distribution model, The Block reported on Jan. 15. Built on the Morpho DeFi lending protocol, it applies a meta-stablecoin model that integrates USDC, USDT and USDS and deploys them to on-chain markets. The project says revenue is distributed directly to applications, networks and users, with partners deciding allocation.

Arthur Hayes says bitcoin could hit record high in 2026 if dollar liquidity expands
BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes says bitcoin’s poor showing in 2025 was driven by a contraction in U.S. dollar liquidity rather than any structural problem. In an essay, he contrasts bitcoin’s decline with gold’s rise and the Nasdaq 100’s resilience. Hayes says risk assets including bitcoin could rebound if dollar liquidity expands from 2026. He cites three drivers: Fed balance-sheet growth, expanded strategic-industry bank lending and MBS purchases ordered for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. He also outlined his investment positions.
