MSIT to overhaul cybersecurity framework, expand scope to AI, cloud and space

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT is set to revamp its cybersecurity framework for the ministry and affiliated bodies. The proposed revision introduces the national network security framework and requires agencies to classify information into three levels. It adds separate safeguards for AI systems and sets clearer standards for the use of private cloud services. Firefighters to get communications priority in disasters; MSIT selects 8 proactive administration cases

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT selected 8 cases as top proactive administration examples, including a system change to prioritise firefighters’ communications over general users during disasters such as major fires. The ministry also recognised an internal project that used AI vibe coding to build a startup integrated management web app without outsourcing. Other selected cases included expanding a data safety option across all plans without fee increases and a nationwide survey and compensation system for shared internet equipment electricity charges.

MSIT sets 2027 budget at 29.6 trillion won, with 9.4 trillion won for AI

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT proposed a 2027 budget of 29.6 trillion won, up 24.5 percent from this year’s supplementary budget. AI spending would rise 84.3 percent to 9.4 trillion won, while R&D funding would increase 18.5 percent to 14.1 trillion won. The ministry plans investments in semiconductors, physical AI and AI data centres, expansion of GPU capacity for independent AI models, AI services and inclusion programmes, and funding for advanced technologies including quantum, biotech and space.
