U.S. Energy Department launches BattMan next-generation battery accelerator program to strengthen EV supply chain

The U.S. Department of Energy has launched BattMan, a programme to support development and commercialisation of next-generation battery manufacturing technologies. The initiative aims to lower production costs and bridge laboratory innovations to factory output. The department said U.S. battery demand for transport and energy storage could rise to 707 GWh by 2035 from 179 GWh in 2025. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory leads the project with national labs and universities.

Japan\'s KDDI turns Lawson stores and post offices into drone bases

Japan\'s mobile carrier KDDI is accelerating plans to build a nationwide drone infrastructure by using post offices and Lawson convenience stores as drone bases. Its unit KDDI SmartDrone plans to expand droneports where drones can take off, land and charge, and make them shared infrastructure for companies and local governments. KDDI has tested direct communications between drones and SpaceX\'s Starlink and aims to start services in 2027.

Circle asks U.S. SEC to treat USDC like cash and ease rules

Stablecoin issuer Circle asked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to treat compliant payment stablecoins the same as cash in securities markets, aiming to broaden institutional use of USDC. In a submission to the SEC, Circle proposed changes in three areas: securities offerings, broker-dealer regulatory capital calculations and customer reserve accounts. The request responds to the SEC’s proposed Regulation Crypto Assets and references the GENIUS Act’s requirements for payment stablecoins.
