[Digital Today intern reporter Seung-ah Yoo] Rockstar Games' new title 'GTA 6' is expected to require a 210 GB download on the PlayStation 5 (PS5).

On Oct. 27 (local time), IT outlet Engadget reported that data miner 'PlayStation Game Size' posted the information on X, formerly Twitter, and Insider Gaming also confirmed it.

It is still unclear whether 210 GB refers to the game download size or the total storage required for installation. Temporary files during installation could take up additional space, meaning more free space may be needed in practice.

That is a large figure even compared with previous titles. According to IGN, 'Red Dead Redemption 2', released in 2018, required 149 GB of free space to install on the PlayStation 4 (PS4). The estimated download size for GTA 6 is 61 GB larger. Compared with the standard 512 GB Xbox Series S, which has about 362 GB of usable storage, it would take up more than half of the space.

If an additional patch is released on launch day, the burden on users could grow. Insider Gaming projected that downloading the main game and the launch-day patch could take a significant amount of time. Download time, as well as storage capacity, is a factor that could affect the early user experience.

Large games are a notable trend in the recent AAA game market. As graphics quality improves and online multiplayer and open-world structures become more common, game file sizes have also grown. Developers have taken steps to reduce size. A representative example is Activision separating 'Warzone' from the annual 'Call of Duty' series. But the growth in game sizes remains an unresolved challenge.

Users who want to play from the release day need to secure storage space in advance. PlayStation Game Size said GTA 6 would be available for pre-download from Nov. 12, with an official release on Nov. 19. Using pre-download can reduce the time it takes to download the game from scratch on release day.

Rockstar Games has said GTA 6 will be a large-scale game. The 210 GB figure is still an unconfirmed estimate, and the final install size and the size of the launch-day patch have not been disclosed. If the estimate proves accurate, securing storage space before release is expected to be an important preparation task for console users.
