Korean media fall behind global platforms; original content expansion urged
A study found the overall competitiveness of South Korea\'s major media services is lower than that of global platforms, and called for narrowing gaps in capital and content investment and integrating fragmented domestic platforms. In a survey of 32 experts, 93.8 percent agreed Korean media services face a crisis from competition with global platforms. User surveys showed domestic paid OTT services were seen at 57 to 73 percent of Netflix’s competitiveness, with expanding original content cited as the top priority.

South Korea\'s National Assembly Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee begins second-half activities after ruling and opposition parties completed member assignments. The panel is expected to focus on securing budgets and setting investment priorities for government AI projects, ensuring power supply for AI data centres and chip plants, and overhauling broadcasting and telecom rules. It is also set to debate regulation of false and manipulated information, follow-up work on the AI basic law and media fund financing.

The event in Seoul was part of the Intelligent Information Society Legal and Institutional Forum run with legal, industry, academic and research experts. Participants reviewed AI’s impact on people’s lives, rights and opportunities by sector and discussed reforms, including protections for human dignity and fundamental rights.
