South Korea’s three mobile carriers step up security spending to counter AI threats
South Korea’s three telecom carriers are accelerating investment in information security as hacking incidents and AI-based cyber threats grow. Their combined spending last year rose about 22 percent to 367.5 billion won, data showed. SK Telecom and SK Broadband focused on revamping governance and response systems and plan further spending. KT stressed in-house expertise and plans a multi-year security and IT investment push. LG Uplus prioritised AI-based monitoring and customer protection.

KT hacking fine decision seen in July, focus on whether uncertainty eases
South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission is expected to finalise the size of an administrative fine over KT Corp’s hacking incident this month. Industry attention is on the level of sanctions after the regulator imposed a 134.8 billion won fine on SK Telecom over a USIM hacking case. Under current rules, KT could face a fine of up to 3 percent of relevant revenue, though expectations are for a lower amount.

Danal partners World K-Pop Center to build K-pop payment ecosystem for foreigners
Danal will expand payment infrastructure linking K-pop experiences, auditions, lodging and wider cultural activities based on its foreigners-only prepaid card K.ONDA. The company said on May 19 it signed a strategic partnership with World K-Pop Center to build an integrated payment ecosystem covering K-pop experiences, training, auditions and cultural life. Danal plans to supply K.ONDA to foreign tourists visiting the center and related lodging, overseas broadcasters and education institutions.
