Samsung Electronics, POSTECH implement first metasurface display technology switching between 2D and 3D
Samsung Electronics and POSTECH said they have implemented, for the first time, a metasurface display technology that switches between 2D and 3D images using only voltage control. The approach uses an ultra-thin metasurface lenticular lens to change focal characteristics by adjusting light polarization. The team said it addressed limits of conventional light-field displays, including thick lenses and narrow viewing angles. It achieved a 100-degree viewing angle with a 1.2-mm-thick lens and validated integration on an OLED panel.

World-first switchable metalens developed to toggle between 2D and 3D
A South Korean research team has developed what it called the world’s first display technology that can switch freely between 2D and 3D without glasses by attaching a metalens to a smartphone screen. The Ministry of Science and ICT said the technology uses a 1.2 mm-thin metalens that changes light refraction with applied voltage, showing 2D without distortion and 3D with a 100-degree viewing angle. The work was published in Nature on April 23.
