U.S. moves to standardise autonomous vehicle identification lights with teal external lighting

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is moving to introduce teal external lights to show when an autonomous vehicle is operating in self-driving mode. A draft proposal sets requirements for visibility from the front, sides and rear, with a minimum mounting height of 15 inches, but makes the lighting optional. The draft also includes changes to safety rules to reflect autonomous vehicle designs, including deleting a turn-signal requirement that is hard to apply to vehicles without steering wheels.

Hong Beom-sik, CEO of LG Uplus, said he would take appropriate responsibility if it is confirmed the company deliberately covered up hacking or obstructed an investigation. He declined to give a firm answer on whether to waive early termination fees for customers switching carriers, saying the company would follow the judgment of judicial authorities and any government guidelines. Lawmakers pressed the company on user protection measures, evidence preservation and promotional use of a top evaluation grade.
