Korea to launch cross-government research security response system, pushes new sensitive project category
South Korea will launch a cross-government response system to strengthen research security, aiming to manage risks such as the leakage of research assets and undue foreign interference as international cooperation expands. The science ministry held a meeting with related agencies and experts to review policy direction, plans and operating systems. The government plans to improve conflict-of-interest management, tighten security rules and create a new “sensitive project” category in August.

A more horizontal workplace culture is taking root inside South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT, with staff addressing senior officials by name plus “-nim” instead of rank. The change, launched after Deputy Prime Minister and minister Bae Kyung-hoon took office, has spread beyond forms of address to reporting styles, meeting practices and communication. The ministry is also promoting recognition programmes and work-style changes aimed at improving efficiency.

Japan joins U.S. AI project Genesis Mission to co-invest $1 billion over five years
Japan will join the U.S. government’s artificial intelligence research project Genesis Mission as its first overseas partner. The two countries plan to invest $1 billion over five years to jointly develop technology to accelerate scientific research. Senior officials from Japan’s education and industry ministries are to visit the United States in early June and officially announce cooperation measures with the Department of Energy, which oversees the programme.
