7,000 humanoid robots sold, but most go to labs not factories

Manus returns to independent company after $2 billion merger with Meta collapses

Chinese AI agent startup Manus will soon resume operating as an independent company after a $2 billion deal to be acquired by Meta collapsed. CNBC reported on Aug. 11 that Chinese regulators in April demanded the withdrawal of the transaction, and the two sides have since been carrying out separation work. Manus was founded in China in 2022 and later moved to Singapore. Meta announced the acquisition last December.

China considers tighter export controls on homegrown AI and semiconductor technology

China is weighing measures to manage homegrown AI models and semiconductors as strategic national assets, including possible export controls, a report said. Draft rules have not been disclosed. The move comes as the United States has tightened curbs on chip and chipmaking technology exports to China since October 2022. Research groups said China is shifting from acquiring foreign technology to managing exports of its own capabilities, while enforcement could be complicated by grey-market channels.
