CATL tests 14-year-old LFP battery cells, finds about 85 percent capacity remaining

China\'s CATL inspected lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells that had been operated for 14 years and found about 85 percent of their initial capacity remained. The cells were recovered from the Zhangbei project, described as the world\'s first large-scale lithium-ion battery energy storage project. CATL said lab tests suggested the cells could be used for about 10 more years in small or auxiliary storage systems, with about 1,000 charge-discharge cycles possible.

Sodium-ion batteries seen as next contender in grid ESS market, with 20 percent share projected by 2030

Sodium-ion batteries are emerging as a next alternative in the grid energy storage system market, helped by lower raw material costs, performance in low temperatures and reduced cooling needs, Cleantechnica reported. Morgan Stanley Research estimates their installed-base share will reach 2 percent in 2027, 20 percent in 2030 and 37 percent in 2035. U.S. companies including ESS, Peak Energy and Unigrid are preparing products for grid and residential storage.

Geely validates 500 Wh/kg solid-state battery in road tests, plans pilot use in 2027

China\'s Geely Auto is accelerating development of next-generation solid-state batteries targeting energy density of up to 500 Wh/kg. It plans to conduct validation in real vehicles from 2026 and begin pilot application from 2027 for major brand models within Geely Holding. Geely aims for more than 1,000 km per charge and a battery life of up to 1 million km, but has not disclosed mass production timing or cost competitiveness.
